what is a solicitor?

I am selling my property here in Illinois. It is a four story commercial building. It has been my property for 10 years but now I am selling it for a bigger business opportunity waiting on me in Las Vegas. Can clients use their own solicitor in connection with the purchase of a commercial property? I am thinking of looking for a solicitor. Do you think it is a good idea?
