Does anyone have advice for someone wanting to work in the Los Angeles area?

I want to get involved in commercial real estate somewhere in California. A Realtor that I was talking to said that I would have to work under a licensed real estate broker. What do I need to do in order to work for myself? Does anyone have advice for someone wanting to work in the Los Angeles area?
