house insurance

I just bought a new house here in Wisconsin. It has three bedrooms and two bathrooms. I love the place. It is the right place for farming. I have an empty 1 acres lot where I can plant vegetables and fruits. My family loves the place too. I heard about house insurance. Is it necessary? Why? If I am going to have insurance, what kind of home insurance should I get?
