Can the landlord penalize me for doing so?

I am living with first class lease apartment in Utah. Recently I lost my job and I need to move to California soon. What are the potential ramifications of using my security deposits as the last month's rent when my lease expires? Is this legal? Can the landlord penalize me for doing so?
