who is the FDIC?

A friend of mine introduced me into a real estate firm. I am working now as a real estate agent for three months. I undergo training and seminars to be able to close deals. However, there are certain terms and matters that I want to know. I want to ask if anyone of you knows about FDIC. Who is the FDIC? What functions do they perform?
